Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon preview.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night became the most crowdfunded game in history. Prior to losing that status to Shenmue III, fans clamoring for a return to form to the Castlevania series found solace in Koji Igarashi’s (IGA) newest game. With the familiar ground set by Igarashi and his team, he set out to create his new studio and deliver an experience worthy of fans of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and its successors on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. For backers of Bloodstained, on a certain tier level, IGA also promised a digital spin-off. Developed by Inti Creates, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon will release later this may. Featuring an 8-bit look and classic NES-style gameplay, fans of Castlevania and Bloodstained will delight in this retro experience. You can check out the trailer here.

This runs parallel with another game, Azure Striker Gunvolt. In addition to the original game, Inti Creates also developed an 8-bit spin-off named Mighty Gunvolt. Whereas the former was more like Mega Man Zero, the latter title played like an 8-bit Mega Man title. In Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, you play as several characters involved in the main story of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Similar to Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, you can choose to play as multiple characters. Each one comes with their own set of abilities, such as whip attacks, sliding, and casting magic spells. Also, note the naming of the subtitles. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon derive their subtitles from two Castlevania titles – Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (2001). This was certainly no coincidence. The spirit of Castlevania is alive in Bloodstained.

Curse and Blessing

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night releases later this year. The 8-bit side-story will release this May. Be sure to check out all of the info on the game on the official Kickstarter page. And be sure to check out our preview of the upcoming major games to look forward to at E3 this year, featuring the game itself.
