Earlier today, the official account for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night tweeted out a new trailer for the upcoming title. The Metroidvania game, designed by former Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, has been in development since 2015. After two beta releases, fans decried the game’s poor visual aesthetic.

Many of the players gave feedback surrounding the game’s poor lighting issues and facial animations. Despite being true to the IGAvania formula in terms of gameplay, it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing.

The new trailer showcases the vast improvements in lighting and visual aspect. Koji Igarashi himself even appeared in the trailer to address the complaints.

Quick History

Originally showcased in 2015, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night started as a Kickstarter-backed project by Castlevania: Symphony of the Night producer, Koji Igarashi (IGA). Along with the GBA and DS titles, Igarashi’s claim to fame was the PS1 classic, one of the single greatest games of all time. As a result of Konami rebooting the series (Lords of Shadow) and Igarashi leaving Konami, his next project would spiritually succeed his Castlevania works. Featuring the gothic aesthetic and side-scrolling action, many elements from past Castlevania games returned in Bloodstained.

However, fans did not sit well with the beta. Despite a half-decade development cycle and a beta released last year, fans were irritated with the visual design and poor character talking animation. Unlike Comcept’s Mighty No. 9, spearheaded by Mega Man artist and head, Keiji Inafune, Igarashi addressed these complaints personally to avoid the same cruel fate.

Players wanting to try Bloodstained now can play Curse of the Moon, a prequel spin-off title based on the 8-bit Castlevania titles. You can find it on all of the aforementioned systems as well as 3DS. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will release on June 18th for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox 360. Nintendo Switch owners can catch the release on June 25th.
