Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal announced today that the next installment in the beloved, action role-playing Deus Ex franchise is on its way. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is currently in development for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

“For 15 years, Deus Ex has been a point of conversation across the games industry and beyond, whether the topic is the franchise’s unique gameplay or topical narrative focused on advanced biotechnology and human augmentation,” said David Anfossi, Head of Studio, Eidos-Montréal. “What began with Deus Ex: Human Revolution goes to a whole new level in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, diving even deeper into this discussion and, in turn, offering fans an all-encompassing experience, one which will challenge their skills as players and emphasize decision-making based on real world topics.”

The plot for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided sees the setting in 2029, two years after the events of Human Revolution, brought upon by the incident with augmentations that resulted in the deaths of millions. Augmentations in the Deus Ex saga allowed improved physicality and mentality for those with them installed. The incident had separated groups of people into what amounted to a civil war between the augmented and the “normal” people. In the panic and chaos, figures of power, both political and social, took advantage of the situation to spread their own propaganda to mold society as they saw fit and push forward their on agendas, keeping the truth away from public ears.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided returns us to the story of Adam Jensen, a former security chief at a biotech company called Sarif Industries, and a highly augmented anti-terrorist and agent of justice. In this new installment, players will see Jensen with new and improved augmentations that allow him a more grand sense of control. With the political and social chaos at a swift incline since the infamous augmentation incident, it would appear that a larger entity is at play on the chessboard: the Illuminati. Despite their intentions of fighting for justice for the augmented, it would appear their intentions as a radical group are not presented in an admirable fashion. A scene with the Illuminati can be seen in the official announcement trailer at the end of our coverage.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will also stand as a milestone in technological innovations as well as a landmark in the Deus Ex franchise; the first in the series to be on newer generation consoles, using more technological power than its predecessors, including the best-selling and impressive, Human Revolution. A new gaming engine, specifically built for the eighth generation platforms, the Dawn Engine, will be used with Mankind Divided as well as TressFX, as seen in Tomb Raider on the PC and its Definitive Edition on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Mankind Divided will no doubt serve as an indicator for a new generation of action role-playing video games, as well.

The release date for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has not yet been announced, but stay tuned for coverage of the official launch date and further information on this upcoming game. You can watch the announcement trailer below. #cantkillprogress
