Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry 5 preview.

Devil May Cry 5 comes out next month. For those not counting the DmC reboot, we have not seen the true Devil May Cry series is over 11 years. The last title, Devil May Cry 4, came out on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2008. Dante and Nero’s story never continued. Until recently, we have not had any chance to play new Devil May Cry outside of the re-releases of the series, to include the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 4.

A callback to many of our childhood, teenhood, and early adult years, Devil May Cry 5 brings us back to the 2000s. Back when asskicking, high-octane action games were a more popular genre and electronic music with vocals got your blood pumping with a good beat. Whether you’re building up your combo meter or talking trash with the taunt button, Devil May Cry 5’s demo sets you on course to relive that experience once again!

In this demo, you’ll play through one stage as Nero. Summing up a conventional stage through the alleyway and streets of a city, you’ll encounter burned bodies, plant-like demons, scythe-wielding foes, and learn how to use Nero’s new abilities!

Keepin’ it Stylish!

Devil May Cry 5 brings the new Devil Breakers weapon to Nero’s aide. Replacing his right hand, Nero can now use a wider variety of abilities, such as explosives and even missile surfing. Assisted by the weapon-selling merchant, Nico, Nero can purchase these expendable weapons and find them on the map. In addition, he still uses his sword, the Red Queen, and his firearm, Blue Rose, from DMC4.

I immediately embraced the new battle theme, “Devil Trigger,” as the song looped into new parts the higher my combo string went. I’m not going to mention that I’ve been playing the song on repeat since E3 2018.

Also of note is the Director, Hideaki Itsuno, previously directed Devil May Cry 3, Devil May Cry 4, and created Dragon’s Dogma. Rest assured, this game is in the right hands. Any doubts you have will be quelled once you get the game in your hands and you start badmouthing your foes with Nero’s quips and hitting them with style.

DMC5 runs on the “RE Engine,” using a style similar to photorealistic graphics akin to Resident Evil 7. You’ll notice the dark layout of the first area contrast heavily with the bright, beautiful day of the city’s outside halfway through the mission. In a vain similar to DMC4, you’ll be fighting in broad daylight only without people watching anywhere. One attention to detail was the seemingly-apocalyptic genocide of the population. Touching the burned remnants of people will cause them to slowly fizzle away into dust.

Final Thoughts

I made it to the boss, Goliath, before getting my ass handed to me. Despite making short work out of demons, taunting them, and building my combo meter to S, Goliath ended me. Without a Gold Orb or Yellow Orb to help me continue, it was curtains after that. While I don’t plan on seeking my revenge until after the game releases, it goes to show that Capcom is going for a challenging edge, a sign of fan loyalty.
