The latest installment of Mario Kart launched last Friday on the Nintendo Switch, with some impressive sales figures to boast. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe debuted at 459,000 combined sales, counting both digital and physical copies sold in just North America alone. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales make it the fastest selling Mario Kart title to date, even beating out Mario Kart Wii — which sold roughly around 433,900 copies at its launch in 2008.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s record breaking sales for the franchise don’t stop there, the game has a solid attach rate of 45 percent. Almost one in two people who own a Nintendo Switch bought a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on its release date. When you factor in that Nintendo has sold more than 2.7 million Switch consoles globally, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales are monumental for the Switch.

The Nintendo Switch is shaping up to have a great year, with Nintendo projecting even more sales than anticipated for the system. The momentum for the Switch looks to continue this summer with even more must have games for the console. By far the next biggest title for the Switch is Splatoon 2, which launches on July 21. Another anticipated title is ARMS, which is available June 16th. Since its release back in March with Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Nintendo Switch has been a hot item for consumers. Almost selling out everywhere, and honestly a little too hard to find sometimes. Hopefully Nintendo can keep up with the demand, and provide more Switch systems to retailers.
