Learn more about the latest fighters announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters

A look at the upcoming newcomers to Smash.

Earlier this week, Nintendo showcased their latest Direct which featured the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters. Among these include Simon and Richter Belmont from Castlevania, Chrom from Fire Emblem, Dark Samus from Metroid, and King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country. With that said, some of these characters have not appeared in video games in quite sometime. All, however, have maintained a devoted fanbase despite their absence.

You can check out the latest Nintendo Direct below!

In this feature, we’re going over each character and uncover their history. For those unfamiliar with the characters, NerdBite has you covered! We’ll take a brief look at their appearances, their ties to Nintendo, and even recommend some games featuring them. This way you can get acquainted with each character before their grand debut in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!

Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters #1 – Simon Belmont

Debut: Castlevania

Year: 1986

Simon Belmont is the first protagonist of the Castlevania series. Featuring his trademark Vampire Killer whip and subweapons, he sets forth to Dracula’s Castle to slay the vampire, Dracula, and to end his plans to conquer the world.

Recommended Games: Super Castlevania IV, Castlevania

Super Castlevania IV is one of my favorite games of all time. It was the first title in the series to allow a Belmont to jump and move freely. Moreover, the stage design, music, and atmosphere in the game remain compelling to this day. You can purchase it on the New 3DS eShop.

You can also try Castlevania for NES. Released in 1986, the game’s soundtrack and stage design holds up well today. It’s a great foundation for one of the best series of all time. You can find it on the Wii U and 3DS eShop as well.

Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters #2 – Richter Belmont

Debut: Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

Year: 1993

Richter Belmont, descendant of Simon Belmont, fought and defeated Dracula in 1793. Four years later, he mysterious disappeared and Dracula’s Castle returned. Beckoning his ally, Maria Renard, and Dracula’s son, Alucard, the two sought to defeat Dracula and find the missing Belmont.

Recommended Games: Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)

Despite its limited release in the U.S., Castlevania: Rondo of Blood was one of the most popular games in the series. However, if you want to get more intimate with Richter’s movelist, I recommend playing Symphony of the Night. Either the PS1 copy or a digital download on PS3 or Xbox 360 (or One) is fine. This game debuted his slide kick, uppercut, and dash attack. However, he is unlockable only after beating the game once with Alucard.

Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters #3 – Dark Samus

Debut: Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Year: 2004

Created after the final battle of Metroid Prime, Dark Samus is the fusion of Samus’ Phazon Suit and the Metroid Prime creature, consequently appearing as Dark Samus, it flew to the Planet Aether to absorb and spread its element, Phazon. Set to destroy the world, it begins to stalk Samus throughout the game. Despite their similar appearances, Dark Samus is more ruthless and attacks using Phazon. Dark Samus formerly appeared as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Recommended Games: Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Dark Samus only appeared in two Metroid titles. She is the main antagonist of both games. Both are available in Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii.

Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters #4 – Chrom

Debut: Fire Emblem: Awakening

Year: 2013

Chrom first appeared in the first 3DS Fire Emblem title, Fire Emblem: Awakening. A descendant of the Hero-King, Marth, he fights with the Falchion to save his kingdom. The father of Lucina, Chrom is now set to appear in Super Smash Bros. alongside his daughter, who was also playable in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Recommended Games: Fire Emblem: Awakening, Fire Emblem Heroes

Fire Emblem: Awakening is hailed as one of the best 3DS games and, therefore, one of the best games in the series. It’s one of my favorite games of all-time.

Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters #5 – King K. Rool

Debut: Donkey Kong Country

Year: 1994

Finally, we’re at King K. Rool! The pirate captain and king of the Kremlings, K.Rool leads the reptile race that invades DK Isle. Stealing Donkey Kong’s banana hoard, King K. Rool awaits him on his ship at the end of DKC. K. Rool also appeared as the final boss of the subsequent Donkey Kong Country series before missing in action after Donkey Kong 64.

Recommended Game: Donkey Kong Country

I recommend starting with Rare’s original masterpiece. You can find this on the New 3DS eShop or the Wii U eShop. Likewise, the sequel is just as enjoyable!
