God of War Laufey pre-orders open, but Sony still won't say what it costs
Santa Monica Studio has detailed the pre-order bonus and Digital Deluxe goodies for its next God of War, and shown off Faye's new bow - but plenty of the basics are still missing.
Sony has confirmed that God of War Laufey will land on PlayStation 5 on 16 February 2027, and pre-orders opened on PlayStation Store and at participating retailers from 29 September 2026. That’s the solid, checkable bit. Everything else in Santa Monica Studio’s announcement is really about what you get for handing over your money early, plus a first proper look at how the game’s new playable lead, Faye, actually fights.
What’s actually confirmed
The release date is real and specific: 16 February 2027, on PS5. Pre-orders are live now. Beyond that, the blog post is careful to talk about editions and bonus content rather than price, box contents for a standard edition, or whether the game is coming to PC alongside PS5 — none of which is mentioned. If you’re the sort of buyer who wants to know exactly what you’re paying before you commit, that information simply isn’t in this announcement yet.
What you actually get for pre-ordering
Order before launch and Sony says you’ll receive the Last Wish Armor Set, a cosmetic “Phranque Golden Leaves” appearance, and an in-game resource pack. That’s a fairly standard pre-order bundle by modern AAA standards — cosmetic flair and a leg-up on crafting resources, nothing that changes how the game plays.
The Digital Deluxe Edition goes further, bundling a Dark Alchemy Armor Set, Dark Alchemy Blade, Dark Alchemy Bow Scales and Dark Alchemy Catalyst, another in-game resource pack, a digital mini artbook and the official soundtrack. Again: cosmetics, extra gear skins, and digital extras rather than anything that meaningfully expands the game itself. Whether that’s worth the (currently unstated) premium over the standard edition is impossible to judge until Sony actually publishes a price.
The actual gameplay news
Buried under the marketing is the one piece of information with real substance for players: Faye’s new weapon, the Serpent Bow. According to Santa Monica Studio, it has two stances — a full-aim “precision mode” for accurate ranged shots and enemy-impairing hits, which can stack up to five charged arrows for a big volley, and a half-aim “hip-fire mode” for close-range bursts and juggling airborne enemies. The studio also mentions multiple arrow types, including rapid-fire, explosive and multi-target variants, letting players lean into different combat styles.
This is the only part of the announcement that tells you anything about what it’ll actually feel like to play God of War Laufey, and even here it’s Sony’s own characterisation of its own combat system — there’s no independent hands-on account to confirm how it plays in practice.
So who does this actually matter to
Right now, this is squarely for existing God of War fans deciding whether to pre-order months ahead of launch, and specifically PS5 owners — there’s no mention of other platforms. If you’re happy pre-ordering games on cosmetic bonuses alone, the incentives are modest but not nothing. If you were hoping for pricing, platform confirmation beyond PS5, or a clearer sense of what separates the standard edition from Deluxe, you’ll need to wait for Sony to fill in those gaps.
The takeaway
This is a straightforward publisher pre-order push with one genuinely interesting nugget — the Serpent Bow’s dual-stance combat — wrapped in cosmetic incentives and a confirmed date. Worth noting for the calendar; not yet worth pre-ordering on the strength of what’s actually been said.
