Jin Sakai is back, but only inside Ghost of Yōtei's roguelike side mode

Sucker Punch has confirmed the Ghost of Tsushima hero as a playable character in Most Wanted - just don't expect a full sequel starring him.

The claim

Sucker Punch Productions has confirmed, via a PlayStation Blog post published for the Southeast Asia region, that Jin Sakai - protagonist of the original Ghost of Tsushima - will be a playable character in Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted. The reveal came during a State of Play broadcast, and the studio has also shown off a first look at a separate narrative expansion, Ghost of Yōtei: Echoes of Sekigahara.

That’s the concrete bit. Everything else is context for what these additions actually are, and it’s worth being precise about it, because this is not a new mainline game featuring Jin.

What Most Wanted actually is

Most Wanted is described as a “combat survival mode” bundled into the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition - Sucker Punch’s own words are that it’s “our spin on a roguelike”. Players pick from four playable characters, of which Jin is now confirmed as one, complete with his four signature stances from the original game.

The structure is bounty-based: you select a target from a board, fight through waves of enemies and minibosses, and unlock perks mid-run to build a character strong enough to face a boss - each bounty’s boss is a member of the “Yōtei Six”, with the hardest tier pitting you against a character called Lord Saito. Runs can be replayed at escalating difficulty, and a currency called Mon is earned to spend outside runs on techniques, weapon upgrades, charms and character unlocks.

Crucially, cosmetics earned in Most Wanted carry over into the main story - so gear unlocked in the roguelike mode can be worn during Atsu’s core campaign, and in the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion too.

So who is actually getting this, and when

Here’s the catch: this is additive content for people who already own, or plan to buy, Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition. It is not a standalone Jin Sakai game, and it’s not confirmed for owners of a base, non-Complete edition without further purchase - the blog post doesn’t spell out pricing or edition mechanics beyond naming Complete Edition as the container for Most Wanted. There’s also no firm release date given in this announcement; it builds on an “announcement last month” without repeating specifics here. Anyone hoping for a full narrative return of Jin Sakai as the star of his own new campaign should recalibrate: he’s a selectable character in a bolt-on mode, not a leading man in a new story.

What to do about it

If you already own or are buying Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition, this is good news: you get a fan-favourite character back with his original combat kit, inside a mode designed to riff on the base game’s systems rather than duplicate them. If you’re playing the standard edition, hold off on assuming you’ll get Most Wanted for free - Sucker Punch’s post doesn’t confirm cross-edition availability, so it’s worth checking PlayStation’s own listings before assuming anything.

The takeaway

Jin Sakai’s return is real and confirmed, but it’s a side dish, not the main course - a nostalgia hit bolted onto a new roguelike mode, tied to a specific edition of the game, with no date or price locked down yet. Enjoy the reveal, but wait for the actual storefront details before getting your wallet out.
