It’s a good thing Square Enix gave the go ahead to reboot Tomb Raider, because 2013’s Tomb Raider has sold more than 8.5 million copies worldwide; easily becoming the best selling game in the Tomb Raider franchise’s history. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, the gritty reboot set sales records and won numerous awards. A Definitive Edition was released back in January 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, bringing higher visuals and framerate in a complete package.
“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players,” said Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics. “Our studio is proud of what we accomplished with the game.”
It’s easy to see why Tomb Raider captured so many fans, the reboot takes a young Lara Croft and explores her intense origin story. Throwing players on a remote island with danger lurking behind every rock. Crystal Dynamics gave a much needed breath to the Tomb Raider franchise, becoming one of my favorite games of 2013. A sequel is in the works unsurprisingly, dubbed Rise Of The Tomb Raider. The sequel sends Lara to Siberia to search for the lost secrets of immortality. Count me in for another adventure with Lara.
