Minecraft's first new dimension in 14 years is real - but it's not here yet

The Sift debuts in Minecraft Dungeons II this month, but the version that actually matters for the main game won't land until 2027.

Mojang has confirmed that Minecraft is getting its first new dimension since the End arrived more than fourteen years ago. The catch: what’s shipping this month isn’t that dimension proper, it’s a preview of it bolted onto a spin-off game.

What’s actually been announced

The Sift, as it’s called, was first teased at Gamescom and got a fuller showing at today’s Minecraft LIVE stream. According to Xbox Wire, players will first set foot in it through Minecraft Dungeons II, the dungeon-crawler spin-off launching on 29 September 2026. The story setup has “something amiss” disrupting the Overworld, which is presumably the narrative hook dragging players into this new realm.

Mojang has separately confirmed that the Sift will come to the actual core game - both Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition - in 2027. That’s the headline for most players, since Dungeons II is a different, standalone title from mainline Minecraft, built around combat and loot runs rather than open-world building and survival.

So what do we actually know, and what’s still vague

Confirmed, on the record: the Sift exists, it’s genuinely new (the last dimension added was the End, back in 2011), it appears first in Dungeons II on 29 September 2026, and it’s coming to Java and Bedrock “in 2027”.

Not confirmed: an actual release date within 2027, whether it arrives as a free update (as Nether and End expansions historically have been) or is tied to some other release, and precisely what the dimension will look and play like once it’s in the main game rather than a dungeon-crawler spin-off. The Xbox Wire post doesn’t detail mechanics, mobs, or how it fits into survival mode progression - those are the kind of specifics that tend to shift between a Minecraft LIVE reveal and an actual patch.

Worth noting too: Minecraft Dungeons II itself is a separate purchase from base Minecraft. Anyone hoping the Sift means new content dropping into their existing Minecraft world this week will be disappointed - that’s over a year away, and Mojang hasn’t nailed down when in 2027 it’ll land.

Who this actually affects

If you play Minecraft Dungeons or are curious about the spin-off series, you’ll see the Sift within days. If you’re a regular Minecraft player who’s been building in the Overworld for the last decade, this is a “put it in the calendar for next year” announcement rather than something to act on now. Nothing about existing worlds, servers, or mods changes today.

The takeaway

A new Minecraft dimension is a genuinely rare event worth paying attention to, and Mojang confirming Java and Bedrock support for the Sift is a solid, checkable commitment. But the excitement here is front-loaded onto a game (Dungeons II) that most Minecraft players don’t own, while the version that will actually matter to the wider community is still a year-plus out with no firm date. Treat this as a heads-up, not a countdown.
