This week's PlayStation podcast: free games confirmed, Kena pushed to 2027

Episode 549 of the Official PlayStation Podcast is mostly chat and promo, but strip away the fluff and two solid facts remain.

Sony’s weekly house podcast has dropped its 549th episode, and as ever it’s a mix of genuine news, marketing talking points dressed up as “deep dives”, and a chat with an actor. Worth knowing which bits are which before you get excited.

What’s actually confirmed

Two items in the episode are proper, checkable announcements rather than podcast filler. First, PlayStation Plus’s Monthly Games for October have been named: F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896 and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2. That’s a standard monthly reveal and, as always, it applies to anyone on PS Plus Essential or above — no extra tier required to claim them.

Second, Ember Lab has confirmed that Kena: Scars of Kosmora, the sequel to 2021’s Kena: Bridge of Spirits, is now slated for 2027. The studio gave what the blog post calls a “development update” alongside a new look at Kena’s spirit companion, but no firm date or platform list beyond the year itself has been given. Anyone who assumed this was imminent should adjust expectations accordingly — 2027 is still some way off, and dev-update years have a habit of slipping further.

The rest is promotion, not news

Much of the episode is given over to things that have already been announced elsewhere or are simply being re-promoted. Ghost of Yōtei’s Complete Edition and its one-year anniversary get an interview with Atsu actor Erika Ishii — nice for fans, but not a new product or feature. God of War Laufey’s pre-orders, which went live back on 29 September, are being talked through again, including Digital Deluxe contents and glimpses of Faye’s armour — again, this is pre-existing information being repackaged for listeners rather than fresh news.

There’s also a segment on Remedy’s upcoming Control Resonant, covering art direction, boss design and the game’s “paranaturally-twisted Manhattan” setting. Interesting if you like the series, but it’s commentary and background colour rather than any kind of reveal — no release date, platform confirmation or gameplay footage is mentioned in the source material.

Next week’s release highlights are also listed — Kingdom Hearts I-III, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, Deck of Haunts, the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition itself, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Silent Hill: Townfall and Onimusha: Way of the Sword — but PlayStation’s own editorial note on the blog explicitly flags that these dates are “subject to change without notice” and sourced from publisher press releases rather than verified independently by Sony. Treat them as a schedule, not a guarantee.

So who does this actually affect

If you’re a PS Plus Essential subscriber, the October games are real and claimable from release. If you’ve been waiting on Kena’s sequel, you now have a year to aim for rather than a vague “someday.” Everything else in the episode — the Yōtei interview, the Laufey pre-order recap, the Control Resonant art chat — is enthusiast colour aimed at people who already follow these games closely, not new information that changes anyone’s buying decisions.

The takeaway

Strip the podcast chatter away and this week’s hard news is small but real: three PS Plus games for October, and a 2027 window for Kena’s sequel. Everything else is Sony talking about Sony, which is exactly what a first-party podcast is for — just don’t mistake a recap for a reveal.
